I am an artist living on the east coast of the United States, in Maryland.
I have been a painter for several years and have had the honor of seeing my
work hung in the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
When you go to the gallery pages it will become apparent that I am primarily
a realist. I taught myself how to paint realistically. When I first started
out, I wanted to make pictures like Vermeer's. I read that painters back then
often started by painting a picture all in one single color, then applied
transparent colors over top. So, I tried doing the same thing. I began by
painting my pictures completely in black and white with oil paint, then using a
painting medium to thin out my paint and apply the transparent colors (glazes)
over top. I thought it worked out quite well. Plus, I was able to
separate the tasks of developing a design and determining values (lights and darks)
from the tasks of mixing and applying colors. At first I used a hand made painting
medium consisting of linseed oil, beeswax, and powdered lead. It was rather
dangerous to use because of the lead content and I've since switched to Winsdor
Newton's Liquin.
Over time I also taught myself to paint by mixing my colors on a palette and applying
them directly to the canvas. This yields more vibrant colors, which can sometimes
be a very desirable thing.
I tend to use the direct painting method for my floral paintings. When presented with
such subjects, I can't resist the lure of working with all of the wonderful colors
that oil paints are capable of creating. However I often start with a black and white
rough-in of the design to make sure I have a striking tonal composition.
I hope you like what you see on my web site. If you would like to contact me about
any of the paintings listed for sale, please refer to the Contact Me page.
